Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) is commonly encountered in clinical practice and is associated with discernible symptoms that have substantial impact on the patient.1-4 However, the underlying cause of these symptoms is multifactorial and complex and can vary by patient, limiting management of the disorder to an approach based on symptoms alone.1,2,5-7 Exploring the science behind the symptoms is therefore essential for advancing the management of patients with IBS-D.
